Exploring Piano Classics Technique: A Masterwork Method for the Developing Pianist ReviewThis companion to the Repertoire bk of the same series drills patterns (mostly 5-finger)/touches correlating to pieces in Repertoire. Includes "warm-up patterns" (progressing from half notes to quarters and 8ths), "triad twisters" (broken chord pattern) and cross-hand arpeggios in various keys, as well as original compositions by Bartok, Bolck, Kohler, Turk, Czerny, Streabbog, and Bachus.2 and 3-note slurs, changing tone quality and volume, "natural pulse" or accents, changing fingers, the common LH cadential pattern of rising 4th, 8ve jump down and rising 4th, playing consecutive 3rds and balancing melody and accmpt are introduced.
There are photos of a child's hands demonstrating various movements; reviewer takes issue w/directives to "pull fingertip back into fist" when releasing 2-note slurs (p. 10) and "pull fingertip back into palm as if flicking dust from key" for staccato (p. 15). Also disagree w/following:, "To make richer tone, your fingers will move the keys up and down faster, somewhat angrily" (p. 12)
However, reviewer still recommends book for its concept as a tool kit of techniques elementary pianists should become familiar with.
