Les Miserables (Piano Duet) ReviewThe Les Miserables (Piano Solo) 72 page book is one of several official Les Miserables songbooks available. I used to own a copy of the 80 page piano/vocal/guitar edition and I absolutely loved it. The renditions were faithful to the musical and having the piano bars, lyrics and guitar chords all together made for a complete presentation. However, after a dozen years, it was pretty much falling apart. So, I decided to buy the piano solo edition thinking that the arrangements would be better suited to solo piano rather than piano accompaniment to voice. I also expected the arrangements to be fuller and more difficult. Neither is the case.
Unfortunately, the arranagements in the piano solo edition are very poor comparatively. The rhythym in the left hand does little to advance any musical expression and consists mainly of steady eight notes in either repetitive chords or tediously generic arpeggios. The harmonies and syncopations in the piano/vocal/guitar edition are actually much better. Worst of all, the arranger decided to throw in odd chords that completely ruin the flow of some of the songs. However, these are only occasional with most offenses left for the end of each song...and piled on nauseatingly high.
If this were the only songbook available or Les Miserables, perhaps I could look past the several faults in transcription and arrangement. Some of the songs (Do you hear the people sing?) have been etched out competently. However, given that the piano/vocal/guitar edition is superior in every way, I cannot recommend this edition to anyone other than the enthusiast who can't get enough Les Miserables. If you'll get a kick out of exploring some less than decent renditions, knock yourself out.
