Piano Stylings Of The Great Standards Vol. V (Steinway Library of Piano Music) ReviewI have all six volumes of this series. Although I'm a classically trained pianist, I'm always looking for quality arrangements of popular music to play for friends and the occasional restaurant or wedding reception job.
These are the best arrangements of standards I've ever played. They sound professional and because several arrangers are represented, each piece has a different harmonic and stylistic approach - latin to swing to boogie to ballad. Most are of late intermediate difficulty, some are advanced if played up to tempo and with the full written chord voicings (chord symbols are also included). Note that these arrangements are all styled with jazz harmonies. The chord substitutions are inventive and complex but very compatible with these tunes. The 'fills' are varied and in some cases quite difficult. Left-hand parts include walking bass, stride, rhythmic hits, counter-melodies and open-voiced arpeggios. The editing marks - fingering, pedal, voice division, phrasing - are all top-notch. Print, note spacing/size and paper quality produce highly readable sheets. I've discovered a few missing accidentals and two of the books include a corrected reprint of a page, but overall the accuracy is impressive.
I've reviewed several of Hal Leonard's Jazz Piano series and I have note-for-note transcription folios of pieces by Evans, Brubeck, Guaraldi and McPartland. Compared to the Steinway arrangements, the Jazz Piano pieces are relatively easy and need embellishment to sound convincing. The transcriptions are more difficult and often too esoteric for public settings. The 'Steinway Stylings' are perfect as they are - ready to use!
One caveat: These arrangements aren't intended for sing-a-longs or even piano bar type entertainment. They are sophisticated, elegant piano solos that will work best in more formal settings. To paraphrase another reviewer, if you learned the music in all six volumes (sixty pieces - three to four sets), you would have all you need to entertain at receptions, high-end restaurants and other commercial venues.
