Popular Performer 1940s and 1950s Love Songs: The Best Romantic Classics ReviewThe Popular Performers Series has several excellent books in its collection. I pay attention to who is the arranger and the skill level of the arrangements. I find the Early Advanced arrangements can be played by a good sight reader. However, Advanced arrangements require spot-on technique and timing, especially timing.
The 1940's and 1950's Love Songs was arranged by Carol Tornquist who has written an interesting and sophisticated collection of standards. They are written at an Early Advanced skill level. I particularly like "Angel Eyes", "I Wanna Be Around" and "A Certain Smile". By themselves, these arrangements alone make the price of the book a bargain. After playing these arrangements, I now specifically look for books that include arrangements by Carol Tornquist.
