Song of Middle C ReviewThe pendulum on the metronome is swinging back and forth. Ching!, tick, tick, tick . . . The little girl's mother says that "practice makes perfect" and she practices all the time. Her "first piano recital" was coming up in a week and she wouldn't want to disappoint her teacher, Miss Kari, by messing things up. She's going to play "Dance of the Wood Elves" and when she practices, three of them are always there dancing on top of the piano. Of course she's got a big imagination and that's a good thing because Miss Kari said that is something that "true artistry" requires. On the day of the recital she puts on all her lucky clothes (including her pink underwear with the eighth notes) and practices bowing in front of the mirror. Her parents have nothing but praise for her, but her nasty big brother, who was prone to sticking out his tongue at her, says "you might be wearing your lucky hat, but can you take the heat?" All the children are lined up ready to perform, but it will take a while because she is last in line. "Fingers? Hello? Wood elves, where are you? Lucky underwear, don't fail me now!" It's finally her turn and the beads of sweat have broken out on her brow. Will those nimble fingers make those wood elves dance at the recital?
This adorable story is one that many children who participate in recitals or school demonstrations of any sort will be able to relate to. I loved the imaginative flow of the book and the fact that come what may, there is no such thing as failure. The wide-eyed little girl, the dancing elves and the active style of illustration (especially of her practicing) are very appealing. If you have a recital coming up and need a bit of encouragement this might just be the book for you. Perhaps you could share it with the younger members of your household who might enjoy it too!
