Easy Classical Piano Duets for Teacher and Student, Book 1 (Alfred Masterwork Editions) ReviewThese duets are catchy and fun. The teacher part is easy enough to just sit down and play, yet are complex enough to turn out a great song. The student part is fairly easy, although don't get this YET if you are still working on primers. I have taught piano for several years and feel that level 1 is a fair assessment. In the student's part, the right hand and left hand do exactly the same thing practically the whole way through. (So if you feel the book is too hard for your student, have them do right hand only.)
The main challenge for the beginning student in this book is to learn counting. When a student plays duets with someone, they have to keep up the timing and play through mistakes. This book provides good training in this, all while yielding a great tune.
My kids love playing from all these books (levels 1-3...are there more?). The tune resulting from four hands on a piano makes the student feel more accomplished than a tune composed from 6 or 8 notes. It makes them aware of their potential as a pianist a little sooner than if they just worked on simpler sounding solo arrangements. My kids will hammer through their daily practice in their other books, then cap it all off with these great duets. They call them their finales, because compared to other pieces in level 1 books, that's just what they sound like!
By the way, these pieces are also fun to use if you have a child that is a beginner on another instrument, like the flute or violin. They can take the student part, which is generally single note with no chords, while you play the teacher part on the piano. The songs sound great like this as well!Easy Classical Piano Duets for Teacher and Student, Book 1 (Alfred Masterwork Editions) Overview
